Style: Aesthetic movement/arts &
crafts Condition: Excellent A rare perhaps unique panel of tiles each
marked with the placement number and as shown in
the original order above. Lively floral designs
separated by stylised arts & crafts chequer
tiles, quite an eclectic and stylish blend.
Would be ideally suited to a washstand of the
period sited in a bathroom and with fitted
washbasin. Removed from furniture I understand to be
ecclesiastical and used for christenings or
baptisms. Likely to have been painted by a
stained glass company, that which made the
windows. Painted S + W on each tile being the
initials of the company and also a painters
cypher the same on each tile. Versos near perfectly clean, one embossed
Campbell Brick & Tile Co. dating it to
around 1880, the other six with unnamed Mintons
grip which was also made by Campbell who owned
both companies at the time. Corner chip left top was hidden behind the
frame and given the consistent dark blue is a
simple matter to touch in, a couple of very
small surface flakes, other minor marks.
