A rare tile panel from this elusive company.
Individual tiles come to market from time to
time but panels are considerably rarer, it
doesn't help that the company's wares are
attributed to other more famous companies by
collectors, dealers and even a tile historian!
This panel on high quality semi-vitrified red
clay the design painted in white enamel
underglaze. White enamel decoration had quite a
fan base in the day Minton Hollins & Co
perhaps producing more than any other on sage
and dark red clay bodies, it is oft mistaken for
pate sur pate by enthusiastic collectors and
sellers.
The design in the aesthetic taste
illustrating the vagaries of nature with rather
harsh thistles and gentle flowers. A signature
lower right incised in the enamel apparently D
Pickering.
Versos very clean unmarked distinctive grip
pattern.
In good condition, a few rim chips from small
to minute the mostly on the tiles with the least
decoration, surface condition is generally
excellent.
