Minute chip just above bottom right corner. Style: Art nouveau An excellent tubeline tile of a galleon from
a series made in the 1920s and 1930s. There are
two galleon sailing ships in the series which
were introduced in the 1920s and are relatively
often found, this later design is considerably
rarer. The popular galleons are included on the
same advertising sheet as this and others datng
from 1937 such was their popularity. I have called this art nouveau because of the
flow of the line in the billowing of the penants
and sails, the crest of the waves and so on but
really such elements are found in stylised ship
tiles from the arts & crafts movement such
as by William de Morgan and industrial tile
manufacture such as by George Cartlidge. An excellently made tile with none of the
slips and flaws often found in wares made by the
tubeline technique, many Pilkington tubeline
tiles are attributed to Edmund Kent and whilst
it is unlikely that this is by him as indeed it
is for most it certainly maintains the standard
of his work. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed P,
Pilkington and England, painted pattern
number.
