About ten minor rim chips/losses, very minor
surface marks. Style:
Seasons A tend to keep away from the amateur painted
on plain Mintons tiles, most images are coipes
from books especially Walter Crane and Kate
Greenaway illustrated stories and quality varies
widely. They are also misrepresented in the
marketplace as the design on the tile was
nothing to do with Mintons or the original
artist. This is similarly a plain glazed Mintons
tile, likely bought as part of a kit, after the
tile had been painted it was returned by mail
order for kiln firing. Such kits were available
from major retailers and art shops and it was
quite a trendy thing to do in the 1880s and
1890s. However this is a tile with a different
and likely unique picture and shows artistic
talent both in the choice of subject matter and
its execution. Rivers and bridges are quite often seen in
pastoral landscapes but almost inevitably
summertime views I can't think of another snowy
landscape other than a printed winter tile that
comes along from time to time and can look snowy
depending on the way that it is painted. For the most part it is brunaille painted in
such a manner to make an excellent contrast with
the white of the tile to represent snow then we
have the sky with soft colour as if a sunset is
peering through light cloud. It's rather a
clever piece of art much more so than usually
found on such tiles. Verso clean, some slight stain, embossed
Mintons etc, signed R Luckman.
