Perfect condition, minor manufacturing
flaws. Style:
Floral In some ways ordinary but the manufacturing
is subtly different to most and the design has
quite a story to tell. The background is a soft celadon green which
is best seen by comparing with the flower petals
which have beem painted white underglaze. That
gives the impression that the clay is coloured
green but it isn't, it is the glaze, it is the
contrast with the bright white petals. There is a design, (see here)
perhaps the second most popular victorian floral
design, that usually is found on green clay
although a little darker perhaps sage rather
than celadon. There was a legal dispute between
the maker, Shewin & Cotton and the
manufacturer of this, at the time of the
manufacture of this the dispute was a decade or
more past. One can almost read the mind of the designer,
a designer with all the elements of the popular
rival design and arrangeed in a similar manner
but so dissimilar that none could call it a copy
in any sense. Unfortunately for the maker of
this tile it did not sell very well, perhaps a
little late in the day for the style I am sure
it would have sold better a decade earlier Verso clean, printed pattern number.
