Minor chip to one corner. Style:
Aesthetic movement A rare tile being porcelain bodied and with
patent locks, made for W. H. Jackson of New York
so perhaps more are found in the USA. This
exceptional for not having being cemented to a
wall rather it was fitted in to a wooden,
perhaps furniture, frame as the rust marks from
the nails indicate. Patented in England, presumably as England
was the world centre for tile technology it was
not considered worthwhile also patenting in the
USA. A Maw & Co, grip perhaps not as complex
to create as this was patented in both England
and USA. There were several lock back patents similar
insofar as the locks were in the edge of the
tile two of which were by very large scale
manufacturers T & R Boote and Henry
Richards. None are often found presumably
thinning the edge created difficulties in
manufacturing and subsequent handling.
