Two very tiny rim chips, some light
scratches. Style:
Aesthetic naturalistic I don't know how many there are of this style
of Simpson pattern, I've seen a few, many with
birds, some just flowers, swallows and lilies
seem popular. They are just fabulous, always. I
have never seen them with orange sky before, and
it is definitely orange, not tan. It's also very
old. W. B. Simpson & Sons moved to a purpose
built factory at 100 St. Martin's Lane in 1868,
this was made prior to that move. Now think
about what was going on it tile making prior to
1868, Minton, Hollins & Co. was making some
great tiles, so was Maw & Co. but Mintons
didn't exist until 1868, Morris & Co. were
making junk and Morris knew it which is why he
persuaded William de Morgan to start making
tiles but that wasn't until 1872. And W. B. Simpson was producing fabulous
tiles like this. Verso near perfectly clean, combed grip
pattern, impressed Art Tiles Painted by W. B.
