Chips bottom corners, other lesser chips
etc.. Style:
Aesthetic movement I added one of these to my collection over
twenty years ago, this is the only other I have
seen. This may well be the first design produced
by the new specialist tile department at
Wedgwood which later then went on to use the
same ranges of pattern numbers, for transfer
prints, block prints, majolica glaze etc wares
as the pottery works. Like any history there are
gaps in the record, things taken be true that do
no make sense, speculation which has become
conventional wisdom. I've also seen a No.3
design from Wedgwood which is somewhere in one
of the histiorically important boxes of my
collection it being not especially
decorative. The tile is a good design, three printed
solid colours, quite well done for the times,
some good movment, stylistically a classical
aesthetic fusion I guess one could say. I'm not
surprised it is rare, the pattern is rather
dense for interior design use and with Wedgwood
just starting out on the specialist tile making
venture the marketing would have not yet been
well established. So a fascinating tile, definitely one for a
specialist collector, perhaps a museum. Verso some smoke stain, embossed Wedgwood
etc, printed No.1 and registration lozenge.
