Just couple of minute rim
chips, the white speck uppermost upper left edge is
a manufacturing flaw, the smaller one beneath is
not on the tile, maybe was a speck of dust,
remarkable condition for a fireplace
tile. Style: Classical picture A good tile from a quite rarely found series
of six tiles entitled Venus & Adonis this
being Venus with the dying Adonis. Most often
found in just the print various colourways have
beeen seen each perhaps one could call
eccentiric, this with a textured sky rare and
making an excellent backdrop. An early series
from Minton Hollins & Co pattern numbers 341
- 346. On a semi-vitrified buff clay body and
apparently pressed in the press usually used for
enamelled majolica tile so marginally undersize
but thatwas pretty much standard for many
manufacturers. Verso some smoke stain otherwise clean, usual
legend embossed.
