Four minute chips Style: Art
Nouveau A fun art nouveau design on a chequer tile
with a distinctive art deco feel despite its
creation in 1905. Quite rarely found I do really
like it it being rather cute a description that
does not often fit well with art deco. There's a
hidden subtlety to the colouring, the background
green of the decorated squares is a different
shade to the plain squares, not immediately
apparent but it does add depth to the overall
impression. Art deco and art nouveau coincided as artists
gained real freedom of expression for the first
time indeed there is perhaps more art deco in
floral design from the edwardian era than the
1920s and 1930s when most examples of the style
were softened on small scale objects. Art deco
with its regular shapes being more suited to
large scale design such as large buildings where
it makes a bold statement and is in contrast to
the finer decorative elements of previous
eras. Verso quite clean, embossed England and
design registration number, painted pattern
number.
