Tiny chip bottom left corner, minor surface
marks. Style: Art nouveau A rare and fabulous art nouveau tile with a
bold design bright summer colours and in most
brilliant glazes. Henry Richards was the only
company to use this technique of printed outline
and painted with brilliant 'majolica' lead-glaze
colours in the 20th century, Marsden did a few
in the 19th century and there are some by
Wedgwood too which were likely made for them by
Marsden had with oridnary slim printed
outlines. I've seen about half a dozen different
designs using the process this most frequently,
I may have seen ten, the others just one or two.
I don't think I've seen any without a
manufacturing flaw, this has just a minute
pimple in the glaze. All bold designs, I suspect
there are at least a couple of dozen in the
range so many more to yet discover. But they may
take a while to come to light, such bold and
brilliant designs call for adventurous interior
design. Most fireplace tiles were supplied by
builders in new homes, they would play it safe
and go for popular designs with broad appeal.
Similar to a lesser extent with furniture as
almost inevitably there were two or more people
party to the decision so compromise was
required. Verso very clean, embossed England.
