A little wear to his ear and a tiny chip on the
stem where it crosses his body, a few minute marks
to the rim otherwise marks are in manufacture. Style: Arts
& crafts An astonishingly rare tile for a number of
reasons primarily the subject matter of a stoat
(I think it's a stoat rather than a ferret!).
Modelled in the arts & crafts style the
glaze is overfired to create the effect of
speckling and burning near the rim. Furthermore
it is an astonishingly rare size. Four and a quarter inch tiles are primarily
made for geometric patterns and the vast
majority in floor tiles rather than wall tiles.
Some plain glazed are found for walls etc and
also the half size, 4 1/4 x 2 1/8. The reason
for the apparently odd size is that the diagonal
is six inches and is therefore an essential size
for geometric flood designs. Decorated glazed tiles in the size are
virtually non-existant, I'm struggling to think
of another I've seen, of course there are inlaid
(encaustic) tiles for floors in the size. So an
incredibly rare and quite charming tile, quite
something for a specialist tile or arts &
crafts collector, I doubt another will be along
very soon. Verso very clean, embossed Tamar,
Coalville.
