Tiny surface chip top edge, slight roughness to
the tip of the rim, perfect surface. Style: Aesthetic japanesque An excellent example of the art of design,
aesthetic japonaiserie at its best. One of a
series of six 6x6 designs, relatively uncommon,
Maw's quality priced them out of the mass market
especially in the later 19th century when
cheaper rivals blossomed. Designed by Owen
Gibbons in 1881. Owen Gibbons trained at the South Kensington
School of Art and was for a time curator of the
Royal Architectural Museum, Westminter, London
before becoming head of the Coalbrookdale School
of Art in Shropshire. Whilst there he designed a
number of tiles for Maw & Co. He was also a
principle in the company of Gibbons Hinton &
Co established by his brother Francis Gibbons in
the mid-1880s. Verso very clean, embossed Maw, Broseley,
Floreat Salopia badge etc.
