Couple very tiny rim chips, couple very tiny
losses, left flower has wear on the edge of one
petal, unevenness to the rim in manufacture
accentuated by the glaze. Style: Art nouveau One of the company's more popular designs
from the edwardian era but doesn't really fit
any of the standard design genres. Not really
art nouveau, not really classical, not really
floral, not really Mackintosh roses, what is it
then? It's an easygoing, pleasant,
unconfrontational design the kind of thing that
a committee could approve of. Quite why this
design was chosen for such ultramodern
experimental/reactive glaze is a conundrum for
it is the glaze that makes the tile special. Reactive glazes are associated with Ruskin,
Pilkington and others of the art pottery club
but most all major manufacturers indulged often
using more interesting combinations of glaze
textures and colours. The colour is any case
rare and it could be argued that it is an
experimental/unstable colour that was
incorrectly fired but that is precisely what the
art potters are acclaimed for, it is impossible
to know how something will turn out until it is
fired, and as firing was unpredictable the
results could range from awful to wonderful. Verso very, embossed Minton, Hollins etc. and
pattern number. Three tiny corner chips, one minute loss, very
minor surface marks.
