Half an inch roughness right edge, three miniute
losses to the rim, very minor surface marks. Style: Floral An excellent embossed majolica tile in quite
high relief and carefully painted in five
colours, majolica without the benefit of a
raised outline to contain the glazes and
technically a difficult tile to make. Bright
earth tone colours against a rich cobalt blue
ground. Owen Gibbons trained at the South Kensington
School of Art and was for a time curator of the
Royal Architectural Museum, Westminster, London
before becoming head of the Coalbrookdale School
of Art in Shropshire. Whilst there he produced
some designs for Maw & Co then later he
joined his brother Francis in Gibbons, Hinton
& Co. There appears to have been some
technology exchange between the companies for
both were leaders in high relief embossed
tiles. Verso very clean, unmarked, ghosting from the
tile beneath in the kiln.
