A rare art nouveau design from Maw
& Co light and bright with red roses and
rich green foliage against a soft aqua
background.
Maw & Co were the greatest tile company
in the world ever, the name not so well
recognised in the antiques trade for the pottery
companies leveraged their pottery reputation.
Whilst most tiles that come to market originate
from fireplaces and furniture Maw's tiles were
mostly affixed to walls, a more demanding
technical task. Tiles in furniture and
fireplaces had their egdes hidden by frames so
variations in dimesnions, squareness, chips to
the rim etc were readily hidden. No so for tiles
on walls indeed precision of dimensions created
great cost savings in fixing for tiles were not
spaced eith wide bands of grout between them,
they were close-butted leaving barely any room
for grout. So furniture makers, buyers of
fireplaces and the like for the most part chose
cheaper tiles that may not be quite so well made
but the deficiency not really noticed in
use.
Verso very clean, embossed England, letters
'M' and other marks.
