Very tiny chips to the corners, very minor
surface marks. Style: Aesthetic One from what I consider to be one of the
best printed pictorial series of tiles, just six
in the series representing country life. A scene
of a young man and young woman, apparently
heading off to market, chatting at the gate.
Incredible detail, beautifully executed
engraving and printing. The series has a fine
art quality in the engraving which is lacking in
the more popular Mintons and Wedgwood series
indeed Maw's printing is the finest of all the
major tile manufacturers. Owen Gibbons trained at the South Kensington
School of Art and was for a time curator of the
Royal Architectural Museum, Westminter, London
before becoming head of the Coalbrookdale School
of Art in Shropshire. Whilst there he designed a
number of tiles for Maw & Co. He was also a
principle in the company of Gibbons Hinton &
Co established by his brother Francis Gibbons in
the mid-1880s. Verso very clean, embossed Maw, Broseley,
Floreat Salopia badge etc.
