Bottom corners trimmed for the original
installation, shallow chip lower right edge, two
minute glaze chips on the outline ( dark spots are
manufacturing flaws), pinprick near bottom edge
otherwise glaze surface perfect. Style: Art nouveau / arts &
crafts A tremendous are rare design perhaps more
arts & crafts than art nouveau, rather
similar to designs by W J Neatby for Doulton.
Embossed and deeply impressed, the tooling to
make these would have been very expensive, and
incredibly well done with near perfect symmetry.
Superbly painted in the most fabulous coloured
and brilliant glazes and very substantial tiles
at over half an inch thick, top quality
throughout. I have seen this design not so well painted
in lesser colours, as so it is unremakable, one
would pass it by, these colours and quality of
execution a different case altogether. Rare verso with patent locks, a patent lock
rarely seen indeed just once before and on a
Wedgwood tile. Patent number 7198 from 1896,
these tiles probably made soon afterwards as the
locks being so rarely seen likely they made a
few and discontinued perhaps due to technical
difficulties. Versos very clean, embossed pattern and
patent numbers, painted pattern number.
