Slight loss left edge, perfectly clean and most
brilliantly glazed. Style:
Aesthetic floral A nice floral design, stylised insofar as
arranged in a circular or 'swirling' layout.
Printed in black but with a light touch and
glazed with a ivory tone glaze. Swirling designs
especially those made in majolica otfen called
art nouveau but clearly the genre predates the
period. Marsden registered a similar design at
the same time which was more popular but I
prefer this. I think it's a great design, full
but not overly so, lots of movement, some
style. It encorporates a rare patent process, only
example that I can recall seeing the patent also
issued in 1890 refers to a second print in the
form of a mesh or 'lace' overlying the first
floral print. A number of floral pattern were
'aestheticised' with new printing plates adding
a lace effect and Marsden patented a method for
so doing on existing designs. The overlay is
quite subtle producing a pleasing effect rather
than an overt grid or lace pattern as seen on
the only other example of this process we have
had and on the 'aestheticised' tiles by other
companies. Verso very clean,
rails, printed design registration
number.
