Condition: Near perfect One very tiny rim chip and other very slight
marks, most brilliantly glazed. Style: Gothic floral A superb and early gothic style tile by
Minton Hollins & Co almost inevitably
designed by A W N Pugin who had a strong
relationship with Herbert Minton and Michael
Hollins, the latter was director of the
tileworks from 1840. In Pugins light and bright
interpretation of gothic style but
uncharacteristically in black on white, a good
solid black and brilliant white combine to make
a dramatic tile. Mostly we see Pugin's tile work
in bright and cheery colours rather different to
the present day association of gothic and this
is a great exception to the norm. This design in the same colourway appears in
Art Nouveau Tiles by Hans Van Lemmen and Bart
Veebrugge where it is described as "Block
Printed tile designed by Christopher Dresser for
Minton's [sic] China Works,
Stoke-on-Trent, around 1880". It is not by
Dresser, there
is no record of him designing any tiles and a
plethora of evidence suggesting that he did
not. Verso perfectly clean embossed Minton Hollins
etc.
