Marks to the rim, mostly left edge, are mostly
or perhaps entirely manufacturing flaws, surface
very near perfect. Style: Floral A good blousy floral design with an arts
& crafts feel filling the tile in natural
earth tones and brilliantly glazed. Apparently a
printed outline with the colours stencilled by
sponging, rather unusual and a quite similar
effect to tiles by Woolliscroft and Derwent
Foundry. However in a Woolliscroft catalogue a
tile by the process is described as 'litho', we
still have much to rediscover. Probably a
Campbell's blank and likely made by them but
could be an outside decorator such as Stubbs
& Hodgart. But then the design appears in a Carter &
Co (Poole Pottery) catalogue, and at least one
other design from Carter is found colour printed
in a similar manner(an earlier version was
outline printed and hand tinted) and a regsiterd
Carter design has been seen on a similar blank.
Carter didn't make wall tiles until the White
Works opened after 1905, they may have decorated
bought in blanks or bought in the finished
artciles. Versos very clean, unmarked, grid grip
pattern. Top left corner a glazed over manufacturing
flaw, half a dozen minute rim chips/losses, surface
near perfect.
