Bottom right corner neatly filed for the
original fixing, surface very near perfect, most
brilliantly glazed. Style:
Gothic An excellent gothic quatrefoil design moulded
in high relief yet with subtlety and fine
detail. In lead glaze majolica, embossed and
deeply indented and glazed in four colours with
extremely high brilliance. Pure gothic modern
majolica (lead glazed) tiles are really quite
rare especially multicolour designs, they
represented challenges in decoration being low
viscousity and patterns as this without raised
outlines to contain the glazes were difficult to
paint and fire. The development of such glazes
coincided with the end of the aesthetic and
floral tile style periods and the onset of art
nouveau by which time gothic was already a
footnote yet it is at its most expressive when
represented in brilliant lead glaze. Campbell Tile Co. produced many fine tiles,
Colin Minton Campbell owned both Mintons and
Campbell Tile Co. Until at least 1883/5, Cambell
Tile Co. made many of the more technically
difficult tiles for Mintons who for the most
part made only printed tiles in white clay, and
of course the studio tiles. The relationship
between the companies continued after Campbell's
death in 1885. Versos clean, offset grid usually referred to
as Minton as it so often appears with their
patterns on the front, painted pattern
number.
