Exceedingly minor marks. Style: Watteau landscape A charming 18th century scene of a young
couple seated in the garden wistfully admiring a
flower whilst her suitor serenades her playing a
flute, in a Rococco style border. One of
Minton's earliest picture series known as
'Watteau' subjects being in the style of the
French artist Jean-Antoine Watteau and also
echoing the earliest transfer printed tiles of
Sadler and Green. The design dates from the mid
19th century but this tile would have been made
around 1880. A tile from the series is
illustrated in Lockett on page 193. The black
print on the white body gives a sharp contrast
and shows great detail. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed Mintons
etc.
