From the popular Shakespeare series and depicting act iv scene iv from the play 'Anthony and Cleopatra'. Signed MS for John Moyr Smith. Blue and white is the least frequently found single colour in this series, this example has a gorgeous flow blue print on a high quality white body.

The Shakespeare series was designed by John Moyr Smith for Mintons China Works around 1872. Understandably the most popular of all Victorian pictorial series being illustrations of the greatest playwright's work. Also one of the largest with 24 pictures. John Moyr Smith trained as an architect and branched out in to design becoming the most prolific designer of figural subjects for tiles.

Just a few tiny glaze chips on the edges, the face is virtually unmarked. The glaze is clean and bright and free of crazing.

The image is a little oversize rather than cropped close to the edges so that the edges can easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly spotted. Other marks described are usually not visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as one normally sees it and can only be seen with a critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch imperfections in reflected light.
