An excellent and rare pair of classical
printed and painted panels in dainty, fresh
colours with a superb quality of painting. This
design in two-colour, 'chocolate and gold', was
popular indeed it was reproduced by Acquisitions
of London and also by ourselves. We also found a
coloured pair of panels, the only complete set
seen prior to these, some thirty years later,
which we installed in a house as I recall in
York Road, Harborne, Birmingham, England in the
late 1980s. We reproduced the coloured panels
and sold maybe a two or three dozen from shops
in Birmingham and Worcester. So these are very
rare, I have seen two complete sets in 40 years,
plus two incomplete sets. They were very expensive tiles, even more
expensive than embossed majolica tile panels
from Mintons. Mintons did not do hand painting
of tiles as a standard in the tileworks,
painting was done in the china works or studio
rather than the tileworks. Almost all Mintons'
tiles are mechanically decorated, transfer
printed, block printed, litho printed or
monochrome embossed as if the company did not
want to cannibalise the sales of hand decorated
wares from its studio. Versos clean, embossed Mintons etc.

Top right tile chip would be hidden in a
traditional cast iron fireplace or within the
rebate of a standard frame, even in a visible
position readily disguised with stained grout,
(grout should always be stained to approximate
to the background colour of the surrounding
tiles). Very minimal damages would be visible
when fixed, some light staining in the crazing
near the edges, minor losses to the rim and
paint. All marks are relatively minor and add
credibility in a period setting. A superb pair
of tile panels well suited to a most refined
period room.
