A bold design crossing the boundaries of
greek and persian styles, the focus a stylised
acanthus/palmette motif in predominently persian
colours surrounded by conventionalised quarter
flowerhead motifs in the corners which would
combine when arranges en masse.
There's something of a conundrum in dating
this Maw & Co. tile with a 19thC persian
style pattern for it bears Made in England
verso. The design no doubt dates from the
1870s/80s but it seems strange that it appears
with Made in England verso which apparently was
only used by Maw & Co. from the 1920s
(however was in use from 1890). It does seem
incongruous that such an old design was made so
many years later, perhaps it was made for a
Verso very clean, embossed Maw & Co.,
made in England.
Perfect rim, minor surface marks.
