A quite rare design, art nouveau and arts and craftsy almost like a tree and in super colours including turquoise and purple. I have seen the design two or three times on Marsden's Trentham verso and in the same colours, with the oatmeal clay the colours are more subdued in most lighting conditions but really come to life in bright light especially sunlight.

The body is press-moulded with a buff oatmeal clay as admired by arts & crafts devotees and most often seen used by Mintons for their arts and crafts tubeline tiles from around 1905 until manufacturing ceased in 1918. A badge is impressed in the centre featuring a circle with a pelican inside and the word Pelham beneath. I have not seen this before, I take it to be Marsden's alternate brand name for such arts & crafts wares as the company used Trentham for tubeline (but not all its tubeline) but would like to see corroboration. There is a Pelham Street in Hanley (now part of Stoke on Trent) which has 19th century industrial buildings alongside the Caldon Canal.

Just this one available, I hope to find more if not only for research purposes but I'm not going to hold my breath.

George Marsden was an amazing innovator in the late 19th century tile industry, perhaps the greatest. He passed away in 1908 so he had a few years in the 20th century to carry on. It is farcial that William de Morgan is lauded for his technical innovation which was basically non-existent (he made the essentially same tiles for forty years until the market had had enough of the balderdash marketing) when true innovators like Marsden, Cartlidge, Maw garner scant attention.

Verso perfectly clean, some slight loss of clay typical for this type of material, impressed pelican badge and Pelham.
