A super design, full on wall covering, very opulent in these colours, also early and interesting for collectors. Printed in three blues on an olive body and with rhodium highlights, rhodium is stiff and the highlights have a little relief, it's really more like appliqué than painted on.

From the Broseley works so likely 1870s and to some extent experimental for the manufacturing is not perfect which is rare for Maw whose quality is almost always exceptional. One can see that some of the rhodium has floated off, some glaze got under it and it moved on the liquid glaze at 1000 degrees centigrade. Also some subsequent losses to the rhodium at the rim where there are stresses of installation and the rhodium not adhering well to the clay has come away with a glaze flake.

One sees similar, Mintons overglaze enamels on the Blue Tits and similar tiles did not stick well to the glaze and flakes off with relatively minor stress, sometimes one sees tubeline that has floated away from it's intended position, flakes lost on underglaze reds and so on but it is very rare to see any such flaws on a Maw & Co tile.

Verso very clean, slight stain, embossed Maw & Co., Broseley etc.
