One from what I consider to be the best printed pictorial series of tiles, a scene of a young woman sheltering under an umbrella whilst walking along a path. Incredible detail, beautifully executed engraving and printing. Just six in the series representing country life, the series not officially named as far as I am aware and includes a beach and a harbour scene so Country Life may be a little misplaced. The series has a fine art quality in the engraving which is lacking in the more popular Mintons and Wedgwood series indeed Maw's printing is the finest of all the major tile manufacturers. Whilst we may marvel at the design of Owen Gibbons let us not forget the skill and dedication of the engraver for to transfer the detail of the artwork through to a copper plate for printing was surely a laborious task of love.

Owen Gibbons trained at the South Kensington School of Art and was for a time curator of the Royal Architectural Museum, Westminter, London before becoming head of the Coalbrookdale School of Art in Shropshire. Whilst there he designed a number of tiles for Maw & Co. He was also a principle in the company of Gibbons Hinton & Co established by his brother Francis Gibbons in the mid-1880s.

Verso very clean, embossed Maw, Broseley, Floreat Salopia badge etc.
