Designer: A. W. N. Pugin?
16" x 8"(each tile 8" x
Condition: Very fine
Price: £595 (approx. $710)
A great and rare pair of tiles forming a
frieze clearly designed for ecclesiastical
situations and so rarely found in the
marketplace. Featuring ravens atop gothic
floliage and the latin inscription Providebit
Dominus - the Lord will provide, all within
typical Pugin-style floral borders.
Pattern number 1321 in the Mintons catalogue,
the introduction states that all gothic designs
therein are by Pugin, whilst Pugin was long
since dead in 1873 when Mintons registered the
design the Mintons catalogue shows other designs
which they registered and which were copied from
Pugin's books. Mintons also copied other designs
from books by Christopher Dresser and many
others indeed in the nineteenth century Mintons
was widely criticised for its lack of innovation
in design being more of a copier than a leader.
Such is now mostly forgotten for the company has
brought us designs which may otherwise have been
denied to us.
Very fine condition indeed minor
manufacturing flaws are perhaps more obvious,
couple very tiny, few minute rim chips, surfaces
very near perfect.
Versos very clean embossed Minton's etc,
printed registration mark.
