Some light scratches near bottom edge, darker
spots are underglaze dents. Style: Art Nouveau A fabulous and rare tile by one of the most
accomplished tilemakers of the times. An
excellent art nouveau design, atypical and very
stylish, in bright earth tones yet very
brilliantly glazed and with a soft arts &
crafts feel. Possibly designed by James Henry
Rudd, it was removed from a washstand attributed
to Shapland & Petter who along with Rudd
were located in Barnstaple. I've seen maybe two or three over the years
but never in sufficiently good condition to meet
the asking price, I'm very pleased to add one in
perfect condition to my collection and likewise
pleased to offer one for sale. The design is found in a 1905 wholesaler's
catalogue albeit with the flowers in blue where
it is priced at 14 shillings per dozen about
double the price of similar tiles by Barratt,
Boote, Richards etc. Verso perfectly clean, some clay loss from
water-based adhesive, embossed England painted
pattern number.
