All marks are manufacturing flaws. Style:
Floral I am sure this is a near perfect copy of an
english tile, I'm not sure which without seeking
it out for there are several similar by the main
tile-makers. A good, bold design of a red poppy
in bright glazes. It's fascinating that the
French were copying our tiles, for most of
history the English have been copying french
ceramics, such was the lead that the nineteenth
and early twentieth century tile industry had in
England. This is what one may call arts & crafts
by accident like how the art pottery
'experimenters' would produce unexpected results
from something going wrong in the kiln.
Sometimes the results would be attractive, or
considered so by some, other times not so much
but 'that's art pottery'. This has been
overfired the glaze being a little burnt and
bubbled at the rim, some separating of the glaze
constituents, spots of kiln dirty, all very arty
and crafty. Verso clean near perfectly clean embossed C.
