An excellent tile from this famous designer, attributed to Voysey by Anthony Cross in his book Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery and Tiles. Quite rarely found and this a superb example in near perfect condition and super brilliant glazes. One of the first pure art nouveau designs from Pilkington's the earliest recorded being registered just a few weeks earlier. Pilkington's were late to the New Art Style being governed by Lewis Day who derided the style, likely they commissioned designs by a designer of such repute as Voysey to counteract the influence of Day.

Cross states "the design covering two tiles,' which I feel is a slight misunderstanding (perhaps for brevity) rather the two tiles could be be used in conjunction to create a number of decorative effects. Having seen mostly odd ones from collections original settings seen include the flower tiles without the foliate and one in a cast iron fireplace with three leaf tiles at the bottom, then a flower tile and a further leaf tile at the top. It is clear the use could be determined by the installation designer, they could be set chequer pattern in a wall or similar larger area indeed I could well imagine a wall with mostly foliate tiles with flower tiles randomly interspersed.

Verso very clean, some clay loss due to water-based adhesive, embossed 'P' in opposing corners and registration number.
