nouveau A fabulous and rarely found tile most
challenging to manufacture embossed in low
relief and glazed with a superb translucent yet
intense glaze creating a most etheral effect.
Émaux ombrants art nouveau tiles are
incredibly rare even from the masters of the
technique Sherwin & Cotton for I have only
seen one design by them, no doubt they did
others but they made a great range of tiles but
apparently few in number. They were a top
quality manufacturer and their wares were priced
accordingly, the mass market makers such as
Boote, Rhodes, Richards and Barratt produced
much more affordable wares. Rarely found perhaps due to the price, in a
1905 catalogue they are shown at thirteen
shillings per dozen, for comparison this
tile was seven shillings and sixpence per
dozen and this
tile was five shillings and sixpence per
dozen. Verso very clean, embossed design
registration number indicating manufacture soon
after the date of the design registration in
January 1903. Rubber stamped pattern number
