A rare and excellent art nouveau tile from this excellent yet relatively unknown company. Rare because the design is rarely found yet even rarer for it is an imitation of tubeline. In rather fun colours, typical colour green ground but nicely translucent, yellow and tan for the flowers and cornflower blue foliage and stems, sounds a little strange written out but super when the eye beholds.

'Faux tubeline', 'imitation tubeline', 'copy of tubeline' etc are phrases heard from time to time even appearing in books by authors who should know better for almost inevitably they refer to cloisonné style raised outlines as introduced by Pilkington's in 1893. Whilst embossed tile specialists such as Sherwin & Cotton and Godwin & Hewitt had developed glazes that remained in place whilst still having high brilliance many companies needed outlines to keep, or try to keep, the glazes in place. So raised outlines were not well viewed by the imdustry experts, bulbous. organic moulding produced the best results from translucent glazes. However raised outlines did help with glaze painting and greatly affected the number of rejects/seconds and cost is a major factor for consumers and indeed builders.

Embossed tiles have to be machine made, or at least if not literally sculpted or modelled have to be made in a mould so tubeline tiles began to become popular around 1903 to fulfill the demand for limited edition, special order etc majolica glazed tiles. So then tubeline gained kudos and one occasionally sees embossed tiles made quite convincingly to resemble tubeline. On this tile where a number of lines meet most clearly at the bases of the buds but also at other intersections even some tips of the leaves the surface has a little bump as would happen with tubeline outlines.

Verso very clean, slight clay loss, embossed England.
