Minute flakes/losses to the rim, very minor
surface marks.. Style:
Conventional floral A pleasant and not often found floral chequer
design from Pilkington. These are super colours
for fitting in to a fireplace, the warm browns
showing particularly well in firelight creating
relaxing homely feel where reds would be too
brash. Some may say that it is art nouveau in style,
I would say not, it is a conventionalised floral
design in the manner of designs by Lewis Day who
was retained by Pilkington and who famously
loathed art nouveau. There are some lines as
found in art nouveau but they are found in
nature too and what we have here is a natural
form arranged to fit in to the square shape of a
tile. If art nouveau it would be the first from
Pilkington that I have recorded, the first full
blown art nouveau designs from the company
appear rather later in the same year, several
yeasr after their peers but Pilkington marketed
primarily to the conservative institutional
market and were heavily influenced by Day's
disdain for the new style. Verso very clean embossed P in oposing
corners and registration number.
