Perfect Style: Art
Nouveau A very rare and most fabulous tile, a pure
art nouveau design and very late for embossed
art nouveau tile designs being registered in
1912. I'm not a great fan of Pilkington or
should I say its reputation is overstated for
lesser known companies like Sherwin &
Cotton, Marsden, malkin etc made more and far
superior tile stylistically and technically. But
this is a gem from Pilkington, soft movement,
pure style and super colours. Much of the rarity no doubt comes from the
date of introduction for fashions had moved on
past the highly decorative art nouveau, plain
tiles were in, decorated tiles were more
nondescript blending of art nouvea, classical
and conventionalised flowers. Political tensions
and industrial unrest sapped the will for bold
expression of artistic styles and so 1912 was a
far cry from the heady heights of art nouveau in
1900 - 1907. Versos very clean, embossed 'P' in opposing
corners and design registration number.
