8" x 8"
Date: 1872 (circa)
Fabulous and rarely found japanesque tile
printed in dark brown on a good white body. More
Christopher Dresser than most of the designs
attributed to him but he
didn't design any tiles, at least for
Minton, or Mintons, maybe Linthorpe. With a fan
in the foreground, decorated with blossoming
branches, set on a petals on water background,
below two stylised ducks against a key pattern
with rising sun borders to the sides. All nicely
printed in crisp dark brown, a bright and
interesting tile to display.
An early Minton's tile with the apostrophe
between the n and the s, the company was known
as Mintons from 1873. Shown in the Mintons
catalogue in blue and white as pattern number
1504, they usually gave different pattern
numbers to different colours.
Verso near perfectly clean, embossed Minton's
etc and badge.
