Minor flaking to the rim, surface near perfect although glazing imperfections where it hasn't taken so well on some solid areas of colour.

Style: Aesthetic movement
Technique: Block print
Maker: Webbs of Worcester
Dimensions: 6" x 6"
Date: 1884 (design registered)

A quite rarely found design indeed Webbs tiles don't come along very often especially their registered designs of which there are 25 all registered in 1884. A conventionalised floral design perhaps representing poppy and wheat at harvest time, more Christopher Dresser-like than many wrongly attributed to him, block printed in three colours although there are more colours visible due to the stains mixing, being over printed.

Verso quite clean, embossed E B. This is taken to be for Elijah Birch, certainly Elijah Birch designs are found on this blank, as occassionally are Decorative Art Tile Co designs, so how the tile with E B carries a design of Webbs is rather mysterious. We know Elijah Birch and Dec Art both bought in blanks, we know Webbs supplied blanks and likely finished tiles to Wedgwood, so it seems likely that this blank was made by Webbs for Birch, that Webbs also supplied Dec Art, and there was a mix up.

Quite a few mix ups have been found involving Wedgwood and Webbs, Wedgwood designs with Webbs embossed verso, and even more with Webbs abraded off including block printed tiles. This design has also been seen on the well known Wedgwood verso with the embossed L. (Austwick shows an example and it is confirmed). So this is a bit of fun for researchers, and a pretty rare tile with an interesting design.
