A couple of very light scratches otherwise perfect.

Style: Figural 'photographic'
Technique: Émaux ombrants
Artist: George Cartlidge
Manufacturer: Sherwin & Cotton
Dimensions: 6" x 6"
Date: 1900 (circa)

As befitting the age of empire the first émaux ombrants portrait by George Cartlidge was of Queen Victoria, this the second is of Prime Minister William Gladstone. Gladstone served as Prime Minister four times, a record, and also four times was Chancellor of the Exchequer, a liberal politician he oversaw much of the development of industry and trading in the nineteenth century.

Rather confusing to us nowadays is that Gladstone is not named, the front of the tile bears the name of the artist's work that provided the source, H S Mendelssohn. Everyone recognised Gladstone's image in 1898.

Excellent manufacturing, no pooling of the glaze, no crazing to detract, a super tile.
