Small chip mid left edge, scratch and chips from the fireplace frame near the left edge, three other minute surface chips which otherwise is untouched and brilliantly glazed.

Style: Flora arts & crafts
Technique: Moulded majolica
Maker: Mintons
Dimensions: 6" x 6"
Date: circa 1893

An uncommon design from Mintons indeed they produced relatively few lead-glazed majolica tiles preceding art nouveau. Well moulded and finished in a deep olive glaze. A rather substantial tile at half an inch thich and quite heavy. Pattern 2423 in the Mintons catalogue so dating from 1891/2

A repeating design featuring pinecones, an ancient fertility symbol, seen atop gateposts around 17th, 18th and 19th century England although Victorian sensibilities and the discovery and import of pineapples resulted in them being known as pineapples. Pomegranates were also fertility symbols, both due to the preponderance of seeds.

Verso very clean some smoke stain and glaze splashes, embossed Mintons etc.
