No damage, some very slight smoke stain in the
crazing near the left edge Style: Aesthetic Movement A super quality tile designed by the famous
Carron Company and made by T G & F Booth.
The design sums up the sense of victoriana of
its time, classical, japanesque and vaguely
gothic elements blended to make a pleasing and
uncontroversial design. The Carron Company were the world's largest
ironfounders in the Carron Valley near Glasgow
presumably stockists of Booth's tiles they
registered a number of designs made for them by
Booth. They quite rarely come to market for
although Carron was a massive company they were
only one of many and so the market for their
tile designs was more limited than for the
general run of tilemakers designs. Booth were
one of the largest decorative tile makers and
made special designs for several of the more
notable ironfounders, their pale buff clay was
resistant to expansion with damp and thence
crazing of the overlying glaze. Versos almost perfectly clean, printed Carron
Company, design and pattern numbers.
