Small chip top right corner, some other very
slight damage to the rim. Touches of rubbing to
high points on the enamels, some bubbles in the
darker blue which is also not as glossy as the
other colours apparently the kiln temperature being
just a little too high for it. Style/technique: Arts & crafts floral
enamelled A very rare arts & crafts majolica tile
enamel painted with the cuerda seca technique
made by Maw & Co at their Benthall works in
Broseley. A superb arts & crafts design of climbing
flowers in superb colours, not only a fine work
of art but a superb technical achievement for
it's time. To achieve the precision first a very
fine oil based outline in brown was applied
which restricted the flow of the waterbased
enamel glazes when they were painted, and they
do conform exceedingly well to the line. There
are eight enamel colours, quite phenomenal, four
greens, two blues, tan and white, the buff clay
body serves as the background the matt finish
contrasting the glossy enamels. Dating from around 1875, could be a decade
either way, Maws were fuly operational at their
new Jackfield works by 1885. Verso near perfectly clean, embossed Maw
& Co, Benthall Works, Broseley, Salop.
