Few minor rim chips largest being bottom right
corner, surface very near perfect just a few tiny
touches of rubbing on the tan lines. Style/technique: Gothic enamelled majolica A very light, bright gothic design in the
manner of AW N Pugin with a characteristic
simple three way flower. Creamy background, tan
for the raised lines, super deep mauve for the
flowers, rich green and then dabs of brown and
pink near the rim. super colours overall and
great gloss finish. A substantial tile half an
inch thick and semi-vitrified buff clay. Campbell had to rename his Minton Brick &
Tile works in 1875 by order of the court and so
he did to Campbell Brick & Tile works.
Shortly afterwards the 'Brick &' was dropped
and this tile dates from that period as can
readily be seen by the legend verso. Campbell
was the owner of Mintons Ltd the famous pottery
company which made wall tiles only and he
clearly wanted to use the Minton name for floor
tiles (his middle name was Minton) to compete
with his second cousin Michael Hollins the owner
of Minton Hollins & Co the tile specialist
who carried forward the heritage of Herbert
Minton's experimentation with and introduction
of machine made tiles in the early 19th
century. Verso a little mortar residue in recesses
otherwise perfectly clean impressed The Campbell
Tile Coy etc and trade mark..
