Corners trimmed for the original fitting, one
very tiny rim chip, occasional touches of wear to
the high relief, perfectly clean and brilliantly
glazed. Style: Neo-classical/art nouveau
fusion. This is a fabulous quality tile, Super
quality of design, wonderful manufacture,
modelling of the mould, pressing and glazing,
great burgundy glaze, not a single manufacturing
flaw on the tile and that is rare. Stylistically
a fusion of neo-classical, arts & crafts and
art nouveau, similar sensibiities to the Mintons
design in the background. The quality of manufacture can not be
underestimated which should limit the candidates
for maker, It is better quality than either of
the Mintons produced of the type, Malkin perhaps
though I can't recall any embossed tile by them
quite as crisp. E Smith did some similar quality
wares, Craven Dunnill and Maw were certainly
capable but from the known manufacturers my best
guess is Burmantoft's/Leeds Art Pottery. Two tiles to compare, here
a Minton with design dated 1898, here
a similar tile from the same collection and
with extremely similar characteristics. Verso very clean absolutely plain, unmarked
save for a decorators mark in glaze.
