What a super big, bold design moulded with a cloisonée outline as bold as the early ones from Pilkington but in this case a deliberate design feature. Rather a timeless design in some respects, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine Pugin designing it and if a couple of decades later in the 1860 or 1870s people would say Christopher Dresser! Timeless it maybe but it still captures the essence of art nouveau with it's Mackintosh-like flowerhead, similar were popular in stained glass at the time. Rich majolica glazes, super rich green and bright pink.

Pilkington sought to reproduce printed outlines in moulded clay so they were out of scale with the design and soon as other adopted rather more slender outlines, this is in proportion to the boldness of the pattern indeed the pattern would overwhelm a slender outline.

This kind of bold design on tile is rarely found in the market today being ideally suited to arranging alternately with plain tiles and so used for larger areas of walls rather than furniture or fireplaces. Not really suited for fireplaces with the outline to trap soot and be worn by firetools and the like. A substantial tile of the quality of decorative tiles also made made by the floor tile specialists such as the Godwins, Malkin and Minton Hollins.

Verso very clean, 1502 embossed.
