A full foral geometric tile with bold
flowerhead surrounded by fronds and with corner
motifs in the later gothic style when simplcity
gave way to complexity. As usual for the company
a good quality tile well printed and tinted with
An unusual feature of the tile is that the
printed pattern is slightly raised this would
appear to be additional adherence of glaze to
the print. Whilst most collectors are familiar
with glaze thickness varying between print and
clay it is usually inconsistent suggesting
unintentional, this is precisely the same all
over and either a fluke or intended. I go for
the latter given Craven Dunnill's prowess, it
does add to the visual interest the relief
though slight adds that touch of third
dimaension which even to some extent comes
across in the image onscreen.
Verso perfectly clean, usual embossed naming
and kiln badge, painted pattern number.
The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels
wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120
dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can
be forwarded by email if required.
The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc are readily
visible. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
