No Minton Hollins art nouveau designs are
seen with any great fequency but this does come
along from time to time and is probably their
second most popular art nouveau design. Of the
jewelled genre which seem to date from around
1907 and were limited in the period that they
were produced for the fashion for decorative
tiles declined rapidly in the next few years. As
with most jewelled designs one can see some
classical influence the other predominent style
of the times but the art nouveau is clear and
This is the only Minton Hollins tile seen
regularly with manufacturing flaws, it seems
that the high number of tiny bobbles in high
relief was a challenge for the moulding process.
Hollins manufacturing quality in majolica tiles
was usually at or near the best, certainly few
other were in the same ball park, Maw and Godwin
& Hewitt the only really comparable majolica
Verso near perfectly clean, usual legend.
The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430 pixels
wide) in maximum quality JPEG format. A larger 120
dpi image also in maximum quality JPEG format can
be forwarded by email if required.
The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc are readily
visible. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
