Chip top left corner is a glazed over
manufacturing flaw, a few very tiny chips bottom
and left edges. A fairly large glaze flake has
lifted from the middle bottom leaf almost
coinciding with the mid green and not very
noticable, a few other very minor surface
marks. Style/technique: Floral print &
tint A most superb floral tile made for the
ironfounders R W Crosthwaite and made by Sherwin
& Cotton the design registered by Sherwin
& Cotton probably on behalf of Crosthwaite
who registered designs for themselves some of
which also made by Sherwins. Sherwins embossed
Staffordshire knot mark is seen verso and
printed the ironfounders initials and pattern
and registration numbers. Celdon clay body, according to a 1905
pricelist this was nearly double the price of
white, it was more durable and resisted crazing
of the glaze. Printed in warm brown and painted
with six colours the flowers highlighted in
opaque white to lift against the celadon ground.
A really super quality tile and it shows in the
beauty of the finished item. Verso Sherwins embossed Staffordshire knot
mark and printed the ironfounders initials and
pattern and registration numbers. The image is full size at 72 dpi (about 430
pixels wide) in maximum quality JPEG format and on
screen is about the size as it would be in real
life at the same distance. A larger 120 dpi image
also in maximum quality JPEG format can be
forwarded by email if required. The image is a little oversize rather than
cropped close to the edges so that the edges can
easily be seen and any chips etc can be quickly
spotted. Other marks described are usually not
visible at all when the tile is viewed straight as
one normally sees it and can only be seen with a
critical eye when the tile is tilted to catch
imperfections in reflected light. For more details
of how we describe marks see Condition.
