• Manufacturer: C P Sutcliffe

An excellent and exceedingly rare tile. Hand painted in the arts & crafts movement 'trellis' style although set against solid colour 'chequer' segments. A design that epitomises the period and genre, very well painted including some rather complex elements and with a free flowing and natural style. What contrasts with and indeed sets this tile apart from others of the genre is the finish, the handpainted enamels have a high gloss finish quite different to the matt finishes associated with Shrigley and Hunt, Doulton or Mintons Kensington tiles of the style and period. Together with the wonderful condition almost transporting in time for the tile is near as its first proud owner saw it one and a quarter centuries or so ago.

Little is known about the C P Sutcliffe although they had a relationship with Maw & Co of Jackfield, Shropshire and slabbed panels including handpainted tiles are known. Sutcliffe apparently ceased trading in the early 1890s around the time when Pilkington Tile Co the famous Manchester tile company were formed nearby.

Verso quite clean, an uncommon Maw & Co grip pattern and stencilled with Sutcliffe branding.
